Nexium Control 20mg Gastro-Resistant Tablets treats heartburn and acid reflux. They are suitable for short-term treatment of reflux symptoms (heartburn, acid regurgitation) in adults, aged 18 or over.
Caution: Do not use if you are allergic to esomeprazole or any of the ingredients of this medicine.
How to use:

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Nexium 40 mg Tablet (30 tablet) as an OTC product for the treatment of persistent acid reflux symptoms associated with chronic heartburn (chronic acid reflux).
Nexium is a brand name for esomeprazole magnesium, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
About 40% of patients with heartburn and GERD take PPIs and about half of those with acid reflux or other chronic acid reflux symptoms take them. More than 50% of patients with chronic acid reflux who experience these symptoms will require an over-the-counter (OTC) prescription.
"The FDA strongly supports the OTC approval of Nexium for the treatment of persistent acid reflux, a common symptom of heartburn and GERD," said David S. Gerber, M. D., Ph. D., senior vice president, Office of U. Food and Drug Administration. "This approval demonstrates the strong need for an OTC treatment option for persistent acid reflux symptoms, particularly in patients with chronic heartburn and other chronic acid reflux symptoms."
Oxygen therapy for chronic heartburn and heartburn symptoms is available as a prescription drug at a reduced price with no patient assistance. In addition, the FDA will continue to monitor patients and provide updates on the treatment of chronic acid reflux symptoms.
The FDA has issued a warning letter to the company, citing the serious risk of heartburn associated with PPIs. As part of its investigation, FDA received reports of a patient whose acid reflux symptoms continued for up to two years.
About 20 patients with heartburn and GERD have been treated with PPIs, including over-the-counter prescriptions.
The safety of OTC treatment of chronic acid reflux symptoms has been demonstrated by several studies.
The drug may cause a serious condition called hypertriglyceridemia, the buildup of fats and cholesterol in the blood, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other serious health problems. The risk of this buildup is higher in women, and people with certain medical conditions may have a greater risk of developing it. Studies have shown that patients who take PPIs in combination with other treatments for acid reflux symptoms are at an increased risk of developing heart attack and stroke, but there are no controlled studies to suggest that combining PPIs with other heartburn or other acid reflux treatments could cause an increase in heart attack or stroke risk.
There have been several reports of patients who experienced persistent heartburn or other chronic acid reflux symptoms after taking Nexium. One of these patients, David S. Koyuk, M. D., M. P. H., from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama, had persistent acid reflux symptoms for several months and was started on an OTC prescription for chronic heartburn. David, who was also taking Nexium for heartburn, began experiencing symptoms of persistent acid reflux several months after taking Nexium.
